LOL

My son, Patrick, shared a story with some of my friends one night during Christmas.  He said that I was endearing and that I look at life through some “love telescope,” so much so that years ago I misunderstood the teenage text language.  He would text me and I would answer or comment always closing the conversation with “LOL.”  One particular day he texted me that he was sick with a fever.  I answered with, “I’m sorry baby.  Take a warm bath.  Take some Advil. LOL.”

Patrick: “Mom, I have a fever.  How’s that funny?”

Me: “I’m not laughing.  Take care and rest up. LOL.”

At this point he called me:  “Mom, do you have any idea what LOL is?”

Me: “Yeah.  Of course!  Why?”

Patrick:  Mom, you are always so sarcastic on your texts.  There’s nothing funny about being sick.”

Me:  “Pat, I have no clue what part of my text has made you so upset.”

Patrick: “What do you think LOL stands for?”

Me: “Lots of Love.”

My son was laughing through his coughs.  He corrected me by letting me know that LOL meant laughing out loud.

So as he shared this story with my best friend, whom years ago thought I was a bit inappropriate and insensitive for the LOL’s all over emails and texts, had an epiphany.  She finally understood.  The look on her face was that of relief.  I don’t know why she never spoke up! I cannot imagine at the time what people must’ve been thinking of me.  I am sarcastic, but not insensitive.  His little story was making a point of how I see love everywhere.  He believes that I try to squeeze the good in things, and I am happy he does.  I don’t always see the silver lining but I do look for the lessons in everything.

Our way of seeing things, perceiving the world, determines how we play our parts in stories.  I have learned by now to ask what some of those initials mean.  In my world they have something to do with terms of endearment.  I choose and select to stay in contentment through my way of seeing the world in love.  This is a state of peace, serenity and understanding that even when things (or someone) doesn’t fall with my agenda I can still find satisfaction.  All sorts of events are transformed because of this realm in my life.  Living simply in the moment and acknowledging that no other force other than that of the Universe can create or break this realm is my equilibrium.  I try to keep balance because of this.  SO, if I choose to think of LOL as “lots of love,” then be it.  This is my conscious awareness and reality.  This is a choice of how I perceive my world.   Following the norm has never been fun. “LOL, everyone!”
